A man who was suspected of grabbing a purse seemingly disappeared in a grocery store parking lot but was found just a few feet away – hiding in the trunk of a car.
State Police say Troopers were at the Price Chopper on Hoosick Street in Brunswick on Saturday on an unrelated investigation when an elderly woman came up to them and said her purse – with cash, checks and credit cards – was missing. It was taken while she was loading groceries in her car.
A witness said he saw a man take the purse and then walk away, getting into a nearby parked car. When the Trooper checked the car, no one was inside. Just then, a woman came up, wondered what all the commotion was, and said it was her car so, go ahead and open the trunk, police said. It turned out to be her boyfriend hiding there.
Inside the trunk, police say they found the man along with the stolen purse, a crack pipe and a small amount of cocaine. Arrested was Tyler Swart, 29, of Troy and charged with Grand Larceny (4th Degree) and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Police say Swart was also wanted on a warrant for Petit Larceny in Troy. He was processed and arraigned in the Town of Brunswick Court and sent to the Rensselaer County Jail.
