General killed in Afghanistan is a Capital Region native

A U.S. Army general has been killed in Afghanistan and he is a native of the Capital Region.

Maj. Gen. Harold Green was born in Albany, is a 1977 Guilderland High School graduate and a 1980 graduate of RPI in Troy.

Greene was killed when a man dressed in an Afghan Army uniform opened fire on NATO troops at a military base in Kabul.

Greene earned a master's degree at RPI in engineering.  His wife, Col. Sue Myers, is a study director at the Army War College.  He also leaves behind a daughter, Amelia, and a son, Matthew.  Amelia is a graduate of SUNY Binghamton.  

Greene is the highest-ranking officer to be killed in Afghanistan, and the highest-ranking officer to be killed in combat since 1970.
