Amsterdam Police have made an arrest in the machete attack Tuesday night that cut off a man’s hand. Late Thursday night, Police charged Israel Miranda with the slashing.
Police had responded to a large fight in front of 60 Division St. around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday night. One man suffered a severe laceration to his forearm, further investigation revealed a second male had also suffered a knife wound to his elbow, police said.
The male with the severe arm laceration was taken to Albany Medical Center while the other was treated at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam. At the time, neither man was able to be interviewed extensively because of their injuries but cops found the machete dumped in a nearby bush. The victim underwent emergency surgery on Wednesday, August 13, to try and reattach the nearly severed appendage and it is still unclear if the victim will recover full use of his hand.
Thursday, police arrested Miranda, 42, and charged him with Assault (2nd Degree, Class-D Felony). He was held for arraignment in Amsterdam City Court on Friday, August 15. Additional charges are possible, pending further investigation, police said.
The Amsterdam Police Dept. is asking anyone who was in the area at the time of the altercation, and may be able to provide additional information, to please contact a member of the Detective Bureau at (518)842-1100.
