A teenage girl, a passenger on a tour bus headed from Quebec to New York City, is dead after the vehicle overturned along the Northway and rolled over in the median.
It happened around 8 Friday morning between Exits 29 and 30 in North Hudson in Essex County.
State Police say several of the 55 passengers on board were hurt, but describe most of the injuries as minor.
Major Richard Smith says authorities hope the bus's "black box" will provide some of the answers they need.
Smith says two Canadian families traveling behind the bus risked their lives running in and out of the median to help those who were trapped on board and going so far as to try to lift the bus off the girl who was killed. Her name has not yet been released.
The driver of the bus was not hurt, investigators are still talking to him.
