After hearing a noise outside his building, a man opened the door only to get pistol-whipped with a silver handgun, Colonie Police said. After knocking him down, the black males burst into the apartment Monday night, Aug. 25, around 11:45 p.m., police said, at 2627 Third Avenue.

Two men went into the apartment while the third stood over the victim, police said. The man yelled to a female inside to get out of the apartment and she did and police are classifying this as a Home Invasion burglary as they trio took off to chase her down. She was found on the lawn next door bleeding from a head injury after being hit in the back of her head, police said.

She was admitted to Albany Medical Center Hospital and her condition is unknown, but not believed to be life threatening. The man suffered a cut to his head and treated and released from Albany Med, police said, but nothing was reported stolen from the apartment.

This is not a random incident and the man said the suspects were looking for marijuana and/or cash and that he may be familiar with at least one of the suspects, police said. The man, Joseph Berghela, 56, has since stopped cooperating with police, detectives said. Police have not been able to interview the woman, Bonnie Brozowski, 53, due to her injury.

No arrests have been made.

The suspects are described as three black men, one in his 20’s, red-hooded sweatshirt; one in his 30’s, taller, white-hooded sweatshirt; one of unknown age, stocky build, blue-hooded sweatshirt.

Anyone with information about this crime or the identity of the suspects is urged to contact the Colonie Police Department at 783-2744.
