Upstate Issues: Tiny Ticks and Big Diseases

The majority of people who are surveyed about this, don't even realized they were bitten by a tick, because the tick is that good.  They get on you, they bite, they feed, they fall off, end of story,  and you don't even know it.  -Holly Ahern, Associate Professor of Microbiology, SUNY Adirondack

Tiny and gross, fascinating and dangerous.  Those word describe not just the ticks we've come to despise, but also the microorganisms they often carry.

In this podcast, Diane Donato talks with Holly Ahern about ticks and the reasons why you will want to ensure your future never includes a tick bite. Prevention is your best defense.

Holly Ahern is an Associate Professor of Microbiology at SUNY Adirondack and the co-founder of the Lyme Action Network.  She also has personal family experience with the chronic disease that can result from a tick bite.

Find out what Ahern has learned about the crafty little organism that cause such havoc in humans, why people bring her ticks, and the concerns she has about how current medical research isn't keeping up with the tick-borne disease epidemic.  Ahern also clears up some misconceptions about what we currently believe about Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.
