It will be the first Saint Patrick's Day holiday for ride-sharing services in the Capital Region.
Tim Wedeman, a part-time driver for Uber, tells News Channel 13 the surge-pricing used by both Uber and Lyft are well worth the effort and expense.
"Would you rather take an Uber, which is going to be about, average $30-40, or face a D.W.I., which is thousands in fines, embarrassment, etc., it's a no-brainer."
Riders can expect longer wait times for a ride today, but there is an option to schedule a pick-up for a specific time.
Uber spokesperson, Danielle Filson, tells News Channel 13, the surge-pricing can provide drivers with motivation to make some extra money.
"On high demand days, like Saint Patrick's Day, sometimes prices can be a bit higher, we want drivers to be incentivized to be on the roads, providing rides..."
According to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 40% of driving fatalities on Saint Patrick's Day, from 2012 to 2016, involved a drunk driver.
