The American Red Cross is donating 100,000 smoke detectors to homeowners across the country.
Hundreds of volunteers will be carpeting Albany, Schenectady, and Troy today, providing free smoke alarm installations.
Kimmy Venter of the American Red Cross says volunteers wearing special, "Sound the Alarm" event T-shirts will get to work.
She adds that the community has really rallied up around this event, and a lot of corporate partners, and community partners, have gotten teams together.
The teams will be assigned little sections of the map, to go out and knock on doors, and let people know what they are doing; that this is a completely free service, and the volunteers will come in and install smoke alarms, at no cost.
Venter says their outreach is ongoing, and they will also allow people to make an appointment to have someone from the Red Cross provide a free smoke alarm installation.
