Late Friday afternoon,Troy Mayor Patrick Madden vetoed the Sanctuary City Resolution that the City Council passed by a 4 to 3 vote Thursday night.
The sanctuary city issue came to a head Thursday night in Troy. By a 4-to-3 vote, the city council has approved what is now known as the "Families and Communities Together," or FACT Act.
Dozens turned out to speak their minds pro and con about the resolution, which defines the manner in which city employees deal with illegal immigrants.
It's essentially the same non-binding resolution first introduced last December, but without the word "sanctuary." The vote came after several hours of debate and an effort by Council President Carmella Mantello to declare the resolution null and void on a technicality.
The FACT resolution now goes to Mayor Patrick Madden. Meanwhile, Mantello has introduced a law that, if passed, would set up a series of public hearings and put the sanctuary question before voters in November. Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin tweeted last night that 'Troy cannot be a Sanctuary City. The county controls the jail. Also, Troy City Council Democrats were perfectly willing to divide the city with unneeded and unnecessary legislation. The mayor MUST veto."
Whether or not the Mayor will sign the act into law remains to be seen.
