Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola has filed a lawsuit challenging the state's controversial new Green Light Law. He says he wants a judge to declare the legislation, which allows illegal immigrants to get a driver's license, unconstitutional.
While advocates say we need to give immigrants the opportunity to have an ID and get auto insurance, those opposed, like Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin says,"they've already shown a willingness to break our laws, why do we believe that they're going to suddenly gonna go and get insurance?"
Democratic Assemblyman Phil Steck tells News Channel 13, "if someone for example, fails to get a drivers license and gets stopped on the road; they can be charged with unlicensed operation and be deported."
Merola is the second Republican clerk in the state to take legal action against the law. Attorney General Leticia James says she's confident the law can withstand a court challenge.
