Local Highlights from the 2019 Election

Election Day 2019 is just about in the books with incumbents winning in Troy, Saratoga Springs, and Niskayuna and some new faces in Rensselaer and Amsterdam. Let's start in Troy, where a contentious three-way mayoral race ends with Democrat Patrick Madden winning a close race with former Council President Rodney Wiltshire. The third man in the race, Republican Tom Reale, picked up only 17% of the vote after a highly-publicized effort by GOP leaders in Rensselaer County to put him on the sidelines.

In Colonie, Supervisor Paula Mahan's bid for a 7th term is proving more difficult than first thought. As of 8:30am Wednesday, she has a 62 vote lead over Republican George Scaringe, and the outcome of the race will depend on absentee ballots.

In Saratoga Springs, incumbent mayor Meg Kelly easily defeats Republican Timothy Holmes. Niskayuna Town Supervisor Yasmine Syed wins a second term over Lisa Weber. However, Amsterdam incumbent Micheal Villa has lost his bid for a second term as mayor to Democrat Michael Cinquanti. In Rensselaer, Republican Mike Stammel, the chairman of the County Legislature, has defeated incumbent mayor Rich Mooney, and Prohibition comes to an end in the Washington County town of Argyle, where voters approved four measures aimed at legalizing the sale of alcohol.
