Starting today, enforcement of a ban on single-use plastic bags will begin across New York State. The new rule went into effect March 1st, but the bags have still been able to be used due to both legal challenges to the legislation and the coronavirus pandemic.
Retailers could be fined if they're caught giving out plastic bags to customers for anything other than helping them carry things like vegetables, fruit, fish and meat. Many stores are already offering shoppers paper bags for a small fee.
