For many years now New York lawmakers have been discussing the possibility of legalizing the recreational use of marijuana. It wasn't until only a few years ago that the use of medicinal marijuana was legalized. Meanwhile other states (including many of our neighbors) have legalized the use of recreational marijuana which adds to the pressure to legalize it here. Meanwhile the New York budget deficit is also being used as an example of why New York should seize on the opportunity for new tax revenue. Meanwhile there are activists and legislators who are saying that if recreational marijuana is legalized, it should be done with social equity in mind.
Excelsior College has recently hosted a couple of symposium looking at aspects of legalizing recreational marijuana. In this episode of Upstate Issues, Scott Dolan, Dean, School of Graduate Studies at Excelsior College talks about some of the issues within the debate over legalization. He also explains some of the reasons that led Excelsior to branch into creating an education pathway for people who want to learn about cannabis control.
