State Assembly Passes Bill Calling For Gender-Neutral License Option

A bill that would give New Yorkers a gender-neutral option on driver's licenses is headed to Governor Cuomo's desk.

The State Assembly on Thursday passed the Gender Recognition Act, which would allow residents who don't identify as female or male to mark their gender with an "X." It would also eliminate the requirement that name changes be published in a newspaper, as well as remove the requirement of consent for a name change from any party other than the individual. Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie says the bill will make it easier and safer for transgender, nonbinary and intersex New Yorkers to live and thrive as their authentic selves.
