New York Governor Kathy Hochul is canceling elective surgeries at dozens of upstate hospitals due to a rise in COVID-19 case numbers.

Hochul says this is because the number of available beds has dipped below ten-percent, and she adds this will make it easier to have enough coronavirus tests on hand. The policy does not apply to hospitals in and around New York City where bed capacity is not currently an issue. It takes effect on Friday and will be revisited on January 15th of the coming year.
