Pioneering Radio Station WGY Celebrates 100th Anniversary

On February 20, 2022, radio station WGY celebrates the 100th anniversary of the first time the station signed on to the air. In this episode of Upstate Issues, Chris Hunter, Vice President of Collections and Exhibitions at miSci talks about the historical significance of WGY on Schenectady, New York state, and the world, as one of the original commercially licensed broadcast stations. Hunter talks about some of the “firsts” that have been attributed to WGY as well as some of the broadcast technology that originated at General Electric in Schenectady. This episode of Upstate Issues also features some audio of original announcer and manager Kolin Hagar and early WGY musician Edward Rice playing the first song that was ever broadcast on WGY.
