Teacher Who Bashed Military While in Class Could Be Asked to Resign

A teacher who is under fire for bashing U.S. military service members in the classroom is expected to attend a city council meeting in Pico Rivera tonight where leaders could seek his resignation.

Gregory Salcido, a teacher and city councilman in Pico Rivera, is expected to make his first public appearance tonight since video of him berating a 17-year-old student wearing a Marine Corps sweatshirt went viral.

The student recorded Salcido referring to service members as the "lowest of our low," and posted it online where it garnered millions of views and thousands of comments.

"They're not like high-level thinkers, they're not academic people, they're not intellectual people;they're the frickin' lowest of our low," Salcido can be heard saying on the recording. "I don't understand why we let the military guys come over here and recruit you at school. We don't let pimps come in the school," Salcido added.

Outrage over the comments followed, with even White House chief of staff John Kelly weighing in, saying the teacher "ought to go to hell."

The Pico Rivera city council is expected to vote on whether or not to ask Salcido to resign during its regular meeting tonight. The city council denounced Salcido's comments in a statement released only a few days after the video went viral.

“We the elected governing body of the City of Pico Rivera unequivocally disagree and condemn the recent comments made by Councilmember Salcido regarding those individuals who have served or are currently serving in our nation’s military," the statement read.

"The City Council and residents of Pico Rivera are steadfast in the recognition that the contributions by those who have served or are currently serving our country via military service are respected and we are grateful for their service.

The City of Pico Rivera was founded upon the principles, values and sacrifices of many of our veterans who when called upon by our nation served with great pride and honor. Those men and women who have proudly served in our nation’s armed forces have proven time and again that personal sacrifice in the face of injustice and tyranny can literally change the world for the better.”

Anyone who wishes to comment during the public hearing tonight will be allowed to do so, however, their time will be limited to three minutes. The fire marshal will also be on hand to prevent overcrowding in the council chamber.
