WGY listeners offered insightful comments Tuesday morning about so-called "Fake News" when we opened up the phone lines for our weekly segment, "Give Us 30". The hot topic got even hotter this week when word surfaced that the company that owns CBS6 and 192 other TV stations, Sinclair Broadcasting Group, ordered their news anchors to read a corporate-produced statement:
“The sharing of biased and false news has become all too common on social media.”
“Some members of the media use their platforms to push their own personal bias.”
“This is extremely dangerous to our democracy.”
The Sinclair message also urged viewers to go to their stations' websites and let them know if they think their news coverage is unfair. This, of course, set off a firestorm of controversy on the "left" and among many journalists.
Sadly, I see blatant bias from many news outlets these days (and not just MSNBC and Fox).
It's wrong and it's depressing. That said, I don't think ownership, regardless of its political leaning, should ever be directly involved in deciding content in an actual newscast. - Chuck
