The Albany County Legislature has approved a ban on the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products at pharmacies, or stores that contain a pharmacy.
More than 30 retailers will be affected by the new law, including Price Chopper, Hannaford, Rite Aid, Walgreens, and Wal-Mart.
A similar ban was proposed in 2012, and approved two years later, but Executive Dan McCoy vetoed it because there was no enforcement mechanism.
But now, any retailer in violation could face a fine of up to $500 a day.
