Albany Common Council Agrees to Pay the Family of Dontay Ivy

Dontay Ivy

Albany Common Council has agreed to pay the family of Dontay Ivy $625,000 to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed by his family.

Ivy, who was schizophrenic, died in police custody, after being Tasered in a confrontation in April of 2015.

Officers involved were cleared of any wrongdoing, and Ivy's family filed a $20 million lawsuit.

Sister Aniesha Johnson says there's no amount of money that can bring her brother back.

Ivy's cousin, Second Ward councilman Derek Johnson, voted no on the settlement proposal, but says he is pleased with progress that has been made since then.

Johnson adds his cousin was one of the kindest people you would ever want to meet, and although the case has been highly publicized, few people know how good a man Dontay truly was.

A representative from Capital Region against Mass Incarceration says they will continue to hold the Albany Police Department accountable for what they feel is racial profiling.
