Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is urging direct payments to give struggling dairy farmers a boost.
Gillibrand is urging Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue to use Emergency Powers to directly pay the nation's dairy farmers $300 million.
Gillibrand says the amount would match a recent emergency bailout for cotton farmers.
Gillibrand estimates the payment would be about $8,000 per farm here in New York State.
Gillibrand says that milk prices are so low, that dairy farmers are losing money on every pound of milk they produce.
New York is the nation's third largest dairy producing state, but in the last decade the state has lost 27% of its dairy farms.
Also not helping, a Pew Research study that says Americans are drinking 42% less milk than they did in 1970.
