20 years ago on May 31, 1998 the weather turned violent in our area.
Tornado watches went into effect early on that Sunday afternoon.
Then, around 4pm, a tornado that was categorized as an F3 with winds between 135 and 163 MPH tore through the Viall Hill Neighborhood of Mechanicville and Stillwater. It also produced damage in Schaghticoke and Bennington, Vermont.
The damage from the storms that hit the area said to be between $65 and $70 million.
Over 60,000 Capital Region customers were without power, in some cases the power was out for days.
Fortunately, no deaths were reported.
