In just a little over two years, October of 2020, you're going to need more than just a standard driver's license to board a domestic flight.
With that in mind, the state DMV is launching a public awareness campaign, encouraging New Yorkers to get an enhanced license or a "REAL ID" as soon as possible.
DMV Deputy Commissioner Terri Egan says either one will require a visit to a DMV office, and she says the documents you'll need at the counter will depend on your individual situation.
The enhanced driver's license will not only allow you to get on board a domestic flight, but it will also allow you to drive to Canada or Mexico. The REAL ID is only designed to be used for domestic flights.
If you have a valid U.S. passport, passport card, military ID, or another form of Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) approved identification, these documents will still be accepted to board a domestic flight.
