The mother of the Albany man charged with attempted murder as a hate crime says her son suffers from mental illness and would not normally be capable of a hate crime.
Kathleen Fallon says her son, Hubert Dabbs, was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder 18 years ago, and was off his meds when the attack took place last Saturday.
Fallon adds her son didn't realize what he did and never would have attacked someone out of hatred.
Fallon says she hopes her son will get the help he needs and not be sent to jail.
The victim was taken to Albany Med with injuries to his head and face, and there are reports that he may have lost an ear in the attack.
