The State Tax Department is reminding veterans of valuable tax exemptions and credits available to them.
Property tax exemptions offered by local governments could reduce the tax burden of a wartime veteran by 15-to-25 % if the veteran served in a combat zone.
Some also offer a Cold War exemption of 15% for veterans who served on active duty between 1945 and 1991.
Close to 300 school districts in the state also offer veteran's exemptions.
Veterans should contact their local assessor's office for details on which benefits they are eligible for.
More than half-a-million New York veterans benefit from these property tax exemptions.
Employers can earn credits as well for hiring qualified veterans.
