Legislation Could Designate Troy as a Sanctuary City

Sanctuary City

There is a move underway in Troy to declare it a sanctuary city.

City Council member David Bissember has introduced legislation that would mean city officials would not ask people looking for government services about their immigration status.

Rensselaer County Sheriff's deputies have been enlisted to work hand in hand with federal immigration officials, something sanctuary proponents object to.

The president of the Troy police officers union says it's a political ploy.

Nick Laviano says police don't go out and knock on people's doors asking to see people's papers.

There’s a hearing set for early next month before council's public safety committee.
