Woman Shoots And Kills Escaped Inmate Who Kicked In Her Door

An escaped inmate from South Carolina picked the wrong house to break into. 30-year-old Bruce McLaughlin Jr. was shot and killed by the unidentified homeowner after he kicked in her back door and made his way to her bedroom.

Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark praised the woman, who had a concealed carry permit, for "being able to protect herself" against an armed intruder.

“This was a big guy. If she hadn’t had a weapon there’s no telling what would have happened,” Clark said. “I gave her a big hug. I told her how proud I was of her.”

McLaughlin Jr. and a second inmate, Timothy Dill, assaulted two prison guards before escaping from Pickens County Prison. They were on the run for just twenty minutes when McLaughlin Jr. broke into the woman's home. Dill was arrested a short time later not far from her house.

Police said that the shooting appears to be justified and they do not expect to charge the homeowner.

“Very few people, even cops, go through situations like that, and she’s kind of a hero to us here today,” Clark said.
