Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is among those who are calling for criminal justice reform.
At a weekend media event in New York City, Gillibrand says the bill addresses deep rooted problems in the justice system such as ending "racist sentencing" for drug offenses, lowering sentences for small offenses and ending the "inhumane" shackling of pregnant and postpartum women.
She's also pushing what's known as the "No Money Bail Act."
She called the cash bail system a disaster and deeply discriminatory.
She argues people, mostly blacks and Latinos, sit in jail without being convicted for months or years all because they can't afford bail.
