Gov. Cuomo is urging local governments to get prepared *now* for potential ice jam flooding this week.
In a conference call with DEC commissioner Basil Seggos over the weekend, the governor told local authorities as long as they don't excavate river banks, they have permission to take "whatever measures they need to" to break up the ice, without prior DEC approval.
The governor also offering up heavy equipment through the State Emergency Management Operation, but stressed it takes time to move that equipment, so the time to act is now.
Residents are urged to keep a close eye on the conditions.
The governor's office says state agencies are on standby to deal with any potential problems.
