Troy City Councilman Mark McGrath has resigned his post, effective immediately.
This comes a little more than a week after the Times Union published a story about a three-year-old, 12-second voice mail in which McGrath can be heard using racial slurs. In his resignation letter, McGrath says the last couple of weeks have been difficult for him and his family.
He says it's hard to fathom what type of person would hang on to a voice mail just to release it to the press more than three years later.
He says that type of vindictiveness is foreign to him.
McGrath offered no apology in his letter, saying many people have asked him not to step down.
But he says at the end of the day, the only "win" that matters is what's best for him and his family.
