Mixed Bag for Area Hospitals in Government Ratings

The federal government is out with its latest ratings on hospitals across the country, and it's a mixed bag for the Capital Region's 12 largest.

The government has put out ratings based on 1 through 5 stars in an effort to give people a way to compare hospitals based on a number of factors. But officials at Albany Med say the system is inaccurate and misleading, because it compares "very different hospitals" using the same measure.

Albany Med received 1 star from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, as did Samaritan Hospital in Troy.

No one received all 5, but Albany Memorial, Cobleskill Regional, Nathan Littauer, and Saratoga Hospital received 4. Ellis received two stars, St. Mary's and Glens Falls received 3.
