Bill to Give Kids of Military Killed in Line of Duty Free Tuition Advances

A new Gold Star bill is making its way through the state legislature.

Democrats in the Assembly were soundly criticized recently when a measure providing free tuition to children of military members killed in the line of duty was held up, prompting many to ask why.

It even sparked a tweet from President Trump.

Assemblyman John McDonald of Cohoes says no one had any idea of the price tag.

Under the new bill, introduced by Republicans in the State Senate, Gold Star children would be eligible for free tuition starting in April of 2020.

Meanwhile, Republican Assemblyman Dan Stec says he wants Democrats to bring the bill to a floor vote before the end of this year's session.

Gov. Cuomo has said there is time to deal with it, and the bill has his support.
