Two professional sports teams are cutting ties with Kate Smith after potential racism was revealed in some of her songs. The Philadelphia Flyers and New York Yankees will stop playing her version of God Bless America at their games. The New York Daily News reports the Yankees learned that Smith sang some songs that might be considered racist, including "Pickaninny Heaven" and "That's Why Darkies Were Born."
The Yankees used her song during the seventh inning stretch for 18 years and will use a different version of God Bless America.
The Flyers erected a statue of Kate Smith and she is known to the team as it's good luck charm. The Flyers tells NJ Advance Media it's become aware of songs performed by Smith contain offensive lyrics and it does not reflect the organization's values.
