The Business Council of New York State is throwing its support behind a bill to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
The council's president says the organization is supporting the initiative because it sends a message to Washington that immigration reform is a necessary business issue and the right thing to do.
Governor Cuomo says he'd like to see lawmakers take action on the legislation before leaving Albany next month.
If approved, an estimated 265,000 people would be able to get a driver's license.Republicans say it's an issue of public safety, and are pushing their own bill to protect county clerks who might refuse to give an illegal immigrant a license.
