One day after the National Transportation Safety Board released a set of safety recommendations for limos, the Senate's top Democrat is calling for federal changes to limousine safety regulations.
Chuck Schumer was joined by Congressmen Paul Tonko and Antonio Delgado in Amsterdam on Thursday.
Schumer's "Safe Limos Act" would update seat belt standards, seating systems, disclosure on inspections, and more.
Schumer says the families of victims are resolved to see protections put in place.
Local congressional leaders are also urging passage of a bill to create a new grant program to support states' efforts to impound or immobilize vehicles that fail inspection for critical safety reasons.
