Albany County shoppers will have to fork over a five cent fee for paper bags next year.
The new state law banning most disposable plastic shopping bags starts next year in March.
Counties have the option of instituting a five cent fee on paper bags in Albany County.
40% will be used to offset the cost of purchasing reusable bags for county residents, as well as education programs.
Legislator Joanne Cunningham sponsored the bill saying the fee will help prevent the overuse of paper bags once plastic becomes banned.
The legislature will hold a public hearing on the bill, probably before Thanksgiving.
It then goes to County Executive Dan McCoy for his signature or a veto.
