Shaker Substitute Teacher Charged With Videotaping a Student in a Restroom

A substitute teacher at Shaker High School has been charged in an alleged attempt to videotape a student in a school restroom.

Colonie police say 42-year-old Jeffrey Wellman of Albany is facing a felony charge of unlawful surveillance.

Police say it happened when a 17-year-old student noticed that the person in the next stall was trying to record cell phone video of him.

Police say the teen saw some flashes, and believed them to be attempts to take still photos.

At that point, he got his phone and took his own video of the suspect, who broke free and ran out of the school building.

Police were able to use both the teen's cell phone video and school surveillance to identify the suspect.

Wellman was arraigned, and released on an appearance ticket
