A budget crunch triggered by the coronavirus pandemic is forcing the Capital Region YMCA to cut staff.

Officials say over 1,400 people have been let go as gyms and fitness centers remain closed. The local president and CEO of the YMCA David Brown says he hopes to bring a lot of those laid-off staffers back once the facilities are back up and running again. Right now, there are just over 400 people on the YMCA payroll, with most of them working on summer camp programs. Summer day camps started to open yesterday across New York.
