Schenectady's Public Safety Committee has voted to approve legislation that would increase the punishment for people caught riding ATVs and dirt bikes in the city.

Under the law, owners would have to pay $2,350 to get their seized ATVs and dirt bikes back and police would be able to sell them for scrap metal if they're not claimed in 60 days. Riding off-road vehicles is already illegal in Schenectady but their use has triggered safety concerns in recent years. The bill now goes to the City Council where it's expected to pass later this month.
