New York Attorney General Leticia James is warning against a rise in telephone scams.

The scammers reportedly impersonate customer service workers and urge their targets to buy gift cards, in order to pay off a supposedly delinquent bill. AG James says the scammers will then threaten to shut off service if they don't pay. She notes utility companies don't operate that way, adding they also don't accept gift cards for bill payment.
