Albany Bishop Edward Scharfenberger says local politicians who back abortion won't be denied Communion in church.

A diocese spokesperson tells the Times Union Scharfenberger doesn't want to politicize the Eucharist because it's important and sacred. Instead, Scharfenberger would discuss the issue privately with the person and never publicly ban them from getting Communion. Last week, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops discussed rules that could prevent politicians from receiving communion due to their stance on abortion.
