Local District Takes Unique Approach to Attract New Teachers from Community

A local city school district is trying a novel approach to attracting new teachers. In this episode of Upstate Issues, Anibal Soler, Jr., Superintendent of Schenectady Schools, talks about the “Grow Your Own” program which will help members of the local community and high school students become teachers. Through an agreement with SUNY Schenectady, Cazenovia College, and Clarkson University, community members can stay local while working all the way through a master’s degree program, often while finding employment in the school district. Soler says the program is particularly appealing to adults who want to switch careers.
