The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in favor of gun rights advocates. In a New York case, the nation's highest court ruled 6-3 that people can carry a handgun for self-defense.

The case involved a challenge to whether states can decide who receives a concealed carry license. New York is one of eight states that could deny a permit to anyone if "they have not demonstrated a strong reason to carry a weapon in public."
