Protesters across the United States are calling for Albany County to end its contract with Avelo Airlines due to the airline's association with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). On Monday (November 30), demonstrators gathered to demand the termination of Avelo's operations in the area, citing concerns over the airline's involvement in deportation flights.
Marianna Achlaoug, an organizer with Indivisible Albany, emphasized the protest's focus on human dignity, stating, "Because of its association with ICE and the fact they are choosing bottom line over human dignity, we want them out of Albany County" (CBS6 Albany). Protesters, some wearing chains to symbolize the treatment of detained passengers, called for an immediate end to all Avelo flights to and from Albany County.
Avelo Airlines, which operates flights from Albany International Airport to Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina, acknowledged the right to peacefully protest but affirmed its intention to continue operations. The airline's contract with ICE, valued at $150 million, has sparked nationwide controversy and led to protests organized by groups like the National Coalition to Stop Avelo (Side with Love).
In Delaware, public funds are being used to support Avelo's operations despite the backlash. The Delaware River and Bay Authority has committed $500,000 annually for marketing the airline, aiming to boost travel to Wilmington Airport. However, critics, including the Delaware Stop Avelo Coalition, are pushing for an end to this financial support (Spotlight Delaware).
The controversy surrounding Avelo Airlines continues to grow as activists and community members nationwide demand action against the airline's ICE contract. The protests highlight a broader debate over the role of commercial airlines in deportation operations and the ethical implications of such partnerships.
