For the first time ever, Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith drew comparisons to a legendary QB—none other than Joe Theismann.
Problem is, it was for the worst possible reason after Smith suffered two broken bones in his right leg in the third quarter of Sunday's 23-21 loss to the Houston Texans in an injury that not only looked eerily—and disgustingly—similar to the Theismann injury we all have etched in our minds.
But it occurred 33 years to the day that he broke his leg in a Monday night game against the New York Giants on November 18th, 1985.
Theismann himself even took a moment to tweet about it saying simply Alex’s leg is exactly like mine 33 years ago.
Theismann, who was 35 at the time, never played again.
Should be interesting to see if this is the end of the road for the 34-year-old Smith who broke both his tibia and fibula, the two bones in the lower leg, when Houston's J.J. Watt and Kareem Jackson sacked him with 7 minutes, 43 seconds left in the third quarter.
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, who backed up Smith last season, also tweeted his concern and best wishes saying, “Prayers for my guy man! You will bounce back!”
Let’s hope Mahomes keeps having such a record breaking season because the next time we see Smith on a field it may just be as a quarterback coach.
