Avoid These Foods During the Shutdown

On December 22, the Government officially shutdown with hundreds of thousands of workers being unpaid and all non essential employees temporarily furloughed.

One department affected by the shutdown is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. They are responsible for making sure the food that we eat is safe. Due to lack of funding, the FDA does not have the ability to recall food or publicize outbreaks that pose a threat to human health in a timely fashion.

Therefore, while the government is shutdown, you should avoid the following food:

Raw Vegetables - They are prone to contamination. You should especially avoid romaine lettuce, sprouts and broccoli, all of which are susceptible to E. coli.

Processed Meats - These are also susceptible to E. coli and should be avoided.

Ground Beef - Because it's made from many different animals, it is more likely to be contaminated. Opt for more expensive cuts of meat like steak.

You should avoid foods that you don't cook. avoid ready-to-eat products that contain cheese, deli meats and leafy greens or sprouts. It's imperative to cook foods thoroughly to 165 degrees Fahrenheit to kill E. coli, salmonella and listeria.
