DOUG on Cuomo: "Find Me a Crisis"

New York Gov. Cuomo Speaks On Gun Violence Prevention

Just when you thought you’d seen the last of the Cuomo power-point presentations…yesterday the Governor announced a “1st in the nation” state of emergency on gun violence in New York state.

What does it mean exactly? Well, it means we are going to spend a lot of money ($138 million for now) so that Cuomo can keep showing us slides all summer. Great. I can’t wait for the book in a couple of months “Lessons from the Gun Crisis…” By the way, I don’t know about you, but I feel safer already knowing that the Governor and his team are on the case.

Here’s the thing, as with everything Cuomo announces, this has nothing to do with the topic at hand and has everything to do with Cuomo. The Gov. is running for re-election, and this is the latest (the COVID fireworks were the first) in what will be a series of “look at me, I’m in charge” stunts the Governor will pull between now and the 2022 election.

Consider the timeline of events over the last month:

-First, Cuomo FINALLY gives up the last of his COVID emergency powers in mid-June.

-Next, in late-June a new Siena poll comes out saying two things: one, a majority of NYers don’t want Cuomo for a 4th term, and two, a majority of NYers approved of Cuomo’s handling of the COVID emergency.

-That leads us to yesterday, when the Gov suddenly announced the new “emergency” that he’ll be overseeing.

You can almost hear him telling his staff, “they like how I handle a crisis eh? Well then get me another crisis.” And so it’s a gun violence emergency. As I said earlier, GREAT.

I can’t wait to see the paper mache his staff comes up with for this emergency. (Lest ye forget the COVID mountain they created for the last emergency.)
