Spring is here so that means wild life is roaming more freely. We've been hearing stories about the various bear sightings recently, but what you may come across more frequently are deer fawns. The NY State Parks and Historic Sites sent out a reminder recently stating that if you see a fawn, do not approach it but rather admire from afar. A fawn laying in a field of grass is doing exactly what nature intended... staying quiet and hidden. Baby deer lack a scent and dappled coat so they can remain undetected by predators while they grow strong enough to join their mother who are typically no further than 100 yards away. The mothers keep their distance so she doesn't attract predators to the fawn. Don't worry though, she'll visit the fawn to nurse or to lead it to a different location if necessary.
