The Erie Canal is an important part of the area's fabric, and a local museum is highlighting the 200th anniversary of the start of the canal's construction.
Through August 20, the Albany Institute of History and Art is running its Spotlight exhibit featuring paintings, maps and other objects celebrating the canal's history. Events are planned over the next few months not only at the Institute, but throughout the state along the canal route and at related historical sites. The 19th annual Cycle the Erie Canal tour hosted by Parks and Trails New York begins July 9th.
