Since the first episode of Upstate Unsolved we have stressed the importance of remaining unbiased into our investigation into the disappearance of Suzanne Lyall. We aren't focusing on one individual and we're not ruling out the potential of a stranger perpetrator.
From 1993 to 2008, among homicides reported to the FBI for which the victim-offender relationship was known, between 21% and 27% of homicides were committed by strangers and between 73% and 79% were committed by offenders known to the victims.
Dr. Christina Lane is a criminologist and the Director of The Cold Case Analysis Center at The College of Saint Rose. She and the center's faculty adviser Dr. Chris Kunkle, a forensic psychologist, narrowed in on two individuals who - as far as we know - were strangers to Suzy.
The first is Israel Keyes, a serial killer who claims to have committed a long series of elaborate rapes and murders until his capture in 2012.
The second is John Regan, a rapist who in 2005 was arrested for attempting to kidnap a senior at Saratoga Springs High School who was getting into her car after finishing cross country practice.
Both men have ties to the Capital Region at the time of Suzanne Lyall's disappearance.
In this episode we highlight the life and crimes of Israel Keyes and the three connections he has to Suzy's case.
